Moving is a costly proposition, even if you are well prepared. You may have drained your savings to make a down payment, paid rental deposits, and have other expenses. Utilities and other services often require deposits or initial payments, and of course, there are expenses associated with packing, moving and even items you may need for your new home. Cutting your moving costs can help reduce your expenses somewhat and make the entire process less stressful.

Managing Moving Expenses
Down payments and rental deposits are typically non-negotiable moving expenses, but even these costs may have more room for change and space to save than you expect. You can, when negotiating to buy a home, request that sellers cover closing costs to help you save a bit of cash for the move. You may also be able to negotiate lower security deposits, particularly if you have a good rental history.

Other moving costs may be more within your control, but dependent upon the type of move you are making. You can choose to move yourself to reduce your costs. Doing your own packing, renting a truck, and making the drive on your own is, without a doubt, the cheapest way to move. You may even be able to move with nothing but a borrowed pickup truck or two if your move is local and multiple trips are an option. While a lower cost move will certainly be more strenuous and may be more time consuming, if you have more time than money, this can be a smart way to save.

Several different service options also offer a chance to keep your moving expenses in check. You may wish to choose a lower service moving company. Doing your own packing can reduce your costs with most moving companies. In some cases, you may even be able to arrange to load your own moving trucks or storage units that will then be delivered to your end location. The mobile storage unit option offered by many moving companies can be an excellent and affordable choice in many situations.

You may also find that you have to set up and pay deposits for utilities, phone, cable, internet and other home services. You may find that there are alternatives to paying some of these deposits and fees. If possible, ask if current services are transferable before your move to help you save. In some areas, you may be able to use your good credit as collateral to avoid a deposit, or even allow a friend or family member to sign for you to reduce your deposits or fees. Shop around when possible for home services to further cut your costs.

Smart shopping applies even when you are moving, and while time may be tight, making time to spend your money wisely will help it go further. While you have hopefully found the right home for your family, you still need to comparison shop and tap into your available resources for the best solution for all those moving expenses, ranging from the moving truck to cable service.
