What Does Frugality Mean to You?
Frugality is defined as prudence in avoiding waste. This really has no negative implications for anyone. Clearly, we would all prefer to avoid wasting money. Frugality does not, in and of itself, remove the possibility of spending on things you will treasure and enjoy. It does, however, as a life principle aid you in eliminating spending on things that do not improve your life in any way. Moreover, a frugal lifestyle can allow you to reduce your environmental impact, and spend more time with family and friends, and less time working and striving to pay for things you do not specifically need. Owing less and getting more for your money will help your overall financial health and outlook in the long term, as well as the short term.
A web search or a visit to your local library will offer up many books on frugality and thrifty living. Local frugal living resources may well include not only the obvious, like your local library, but also less likely options. Your local utility company may be able to aid you by offering usage analyses and online resources may aid you with your search for low cost and free activities for entertainment. Food co-ops can offer savings on healthy foods for your family, and some areas even offer community gardens to enable you to grow some of your own food. Frugality may help you discover new hobbies and interests.
Frugality can help you to conquer your debt, meet savings goals and more. Taking small steps to reduce spending can have an overall benefit on your financial health. Even something as simple as reducing the amount you drive, eating in instead of out, and using cloth napkins instead of paper can add up to overall savings. If you tuck the amount you save with each of these small changes away in the bank, you'll find that your financial worth improves, and you're able, with time, to learn to enjoy saving instead of spending.
Frugality can help you to learn new habits, and to take pleasure in simpler things. Consumption is a consistent problem in today's society, but being conscious of your spending habits will allow you to spend on what you treasure, and save money for those things that matter. Perhaps you are dreaming of a perfect retirement, saving for educational expenses, or even just saving for a great vacation. Frugal living can help you achieve your dreams, and with simple changes, can allow you to do so without significant sacrifice.
