Making Eating Out Budget Friendly
You may eat out for a variety of reasons. Many people find themselves eating lunch out frequently, since they only have a short time for their lunch break from work. If you would prefer to cut costs, perhaps brown bagging your lunch and eating in a nearby park would be reasonable. If you are willing to include lunches out within your budget, at least some of the time, consider ways to save on eating lunch out. First and foremost, choose affordable restaurants. A rushed lunch is not the best time to try that hip new downtown bistro in many cases, since you will not savor the atmosphere or your food. A good sandwich shop or other local eatery may be both affordable and tasty.
Coupons and specials can make dining more affordable. Local papers and publications may offer valuable buy one get one free meal options, discounts on meals, and other deals. Also, some organizations will offer discounts at restaurants. Check to see if your favorite eateries offer a frequent buyer program to help you save. Consider dining with a friend and splitting a larger meal, if the restaurant allows it. If you are single, splitting your entrée and packing up half for dinner or the next day's lunch can also make dining out more budget friendly.
Dining out as a family can be pricey, but choosing well may make it more affordable. Many family oriented restaurants offer reduced priced kids' meals or even free kids' meals one day a week. Some restaurants will allow two children to split an adult meal, and this may be a more affordable choice. Much of the time a sit down family restaurant with a meal special will be a wiser financial choice than a fast food restaurant.
If you enjoy fine dining, your eating out budget may be higher, but you can still make wise choices. Consider skipping wine with your meal, or going for appetizers or dessert instead of a full meal. Lunches at fine restaurants, if you have the time to enjoy your meal, may be more affordable than dinner. While discounts are not available for fine dining, you may find that occasional charity benefits will allow you to try some of your city's best restaurants, benefit a good cause, and save a bit of money on a fine meal.
One of the most helpful things to remember when budgeting for eating out is to avoid eating out simply because you found yourself without time to prepare food. Packing snacks for the kids, using a slow cooker for meal preparation, or stocking freezer meals may all help you avoid unplanned eating out. Try to plan your eating out for times when you will genuinely enjoy your meal, as opposed to rushed meals in the car on the way home from work or as you get the kids to the game.
